Carving

The carving of the soap stone is done by men, entirely by hand with machetes and simple knives. The men carve the structure of each unique item, preparing the stone for the sanding.

Mining Process

The mining of the soap stone is done by hand, using hammers, picks, and chisels. It is done by men in Kisii, Kenya, often times this craft has been passed down by generations within a family.
